My time in Dubai is fast coming to a close, so I decided to try out the Dubai Metro. The metro is so easy to use, cheap and has great views. I chose to go from Dubai Marina to Mall of the Emirates, I couldn’t leave without seeing Ski Dubai. It’s a great attraction in the UAE, which is held at a frosty -4 degrees. You can ski, toboggan and there are penguins. I had a very relaxing morning watching the penguins from the warmth of Costa Coffee. My photographer and I both preferred this mall to the Dubai Mall. It was a lot smaller and easier to explore, especially since I only wanted to spend the morning in the Mall.
The Dubai Metro is worth going on for the view of the skyscrapers and the Burj Al Arab in the distance. My favourite part was definitely the ride into Dubai Marina.
Dubai Marina is an artificial canal city, built along a two-mile (3 km) stretch of Persian Gulf shoreline. Skyscrapers are poised alongside the winding canal, where luxury yachts are floating happily. The area extends from Al Sufouh Road and comprises Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR). My hotel was located perfectly in between JBR and Dubai Marina, being on the 30th floor allowed me to see the futuristic skyscrapers glistening on a night.
When in a new place I love walking around to find new things, Dubai Marina is one on the best places I have ever walked. It is pedestrianized and flat, with ramps to get to and from the roads. There are seats everywhere, which is perfect as when you sit you can finally see how high up some of the buildings are. I really love seeing the traditional boats floating along the canal, its a great combination of old meets new. Mosques are hidden among the tall modern buildings.
The skyline around this area is quite imposing and changes dramatically from day to night. If you get the chance to go to a rooftop bar, such as Sama Lounge. Dubai Marina looks simply beautiful at sunset.
I decided I couldn’t miss the beautiful city lights, so made the short journey from the hotel to the marina. Turns out is was a great idea as there was a food festival going on. The temperature had cooled enough to make it a pleasant night to wander along the canal. The city lights reflect into the water, making the place look even more magical!
I was rather apprehensive about Dubai before I visited, but exploring has shown me a totally different side of the city. It’s so exciting with fabulous beaches and futuristic buildings. Anything is possible in Dubai and I hope to one day return and explore more of this enigmatic city.
